There’s nothing like a Boeing 747 flying straight towards you to spice up a lazy day on the beach. It might look like something out of a Hollywood disaster movie, but in fact this is a daily occurrence for sunbathers at Maho Beach on the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten / Saint-Martin, as jumbo jets swoop down to land at nearby Princess Juliana International Airport’s perilously short Runway 10.
The amazing spectacle has become a tourist attraction in its own right, with beachside bars listing departure and arrival times and broadcasting radio transmissions between planes and air traffic control over speakers. The jet blast sandstorms whipped up by the planes have also become a popular experience for visitors to the beach.
