Long considered a sacred spot and final
resting place for departed souls, the multicolored lakes of the Kelimutu
volcano are among the most incredible wonders of the world. Though the three lakes are all on the
crest of the same volcano, and two even share a crater wall, they are
all different colors.
The two adjacent lakes, the “Enchanted Lake” and the “Lake of Young Men and Maidens,” are often red or green respectively. And the “Lake of Old People” is typically blue. But their color can vary unpredictably between blue, green, black and red.
